In 1970, Austrian artist Günter Brus returned to drawing and painting after having reached a breaking point using his body as medium in performances of the 1960s. This presentation will look at the expressive "picture-poems" that Brus began to create in the 1970s (continuing to the present day) and their relation to Brus' earlier performances. We will pay particular attention to Brus's fascination with the watercolors of William Blake.
Beth Hinderliter is assistant professor of contemporary art history at SUNY Buffalo State. She is co-editor of "Communities of Sense: Rethinking Aesthetics and Politics" (Duke, 2009). Her essay on Günter Brus "Citizen Brus Examines His Body: Actionism and Activism in Vienna, 1968" appeared in the journal "October" in 2014.
