There is a complex relationship between artists and museums and galleries. It is an ecosystem in which successful careers and recognition are reliant on others. The Burchfield Penney Art Center, because of our mission and the artists whom we present and collect, has the added layer. Our relationship is not just one of business; but we are neighbors, friends, and colleagues. Without the artists, the museums and the galleries would not exist. Not as essential as this, but important to acknowledge, is that without galleries and museums artists would have a difficult time making others aware of their work. What does it mean to be at the intersection of that relationship, for the museums and the artists?
Artists included in this discussion are Gary Nickard, Dorothea Braemer, LeRoi Johnson, and Catherine Shuman Miller, who are also featured in the 10 Years In exhibition. Each of these artists work in different media and markets. The concerns for conceptual, media, painter and print artists have a specificity in how they navigate the art world. Moderated by Scott Propeack, chief curator and interim co-director at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the discussion will also include an overview of how exhibitions move from concept to realization.
This event is free with gallery admission.
